IPB Students Create “Si Galing” Storybook as a Fun Learning Media in an Effort to Improve Children’s Earthquake Mitigation Knowledge
The lack of knowledge of children related to earthquake mitigation, especially mitigation during an earthquake, caused many child casualties when the Cianjur earthquake in 2022 struck. Based on Cianjur’s casualty data, around 37% of casualties due to the earthquake in Cianjur in 2022 were children. One of the villages affected by the earthquake which also had child victims was in Benjot Village, Cugenang District, Cianjur Regency. A total of 2 students from SDN Sukamaju 1 were killed by the earthquake.
IPB students who are members of the Sigaling IPB PKM-PM Team initiated a Mitigation and Trauma Healing Education program to help children affected by the earthquake at SDN Sukamaju I, Cianjur. The Sigaling PKM-PM team consisted of Yunita Ulwiyah, Zidni Ni’matul Maula, Dany Setiawan, Ai Riyanti Noviyanti, and Mochammad Fikri Noor Hidayat, with supervisor Dr. Adisti Permatasari Putri Hartoyo S.Hut., M.Si.
To attract children’s interest in participating in this educational activity, this program is designed in a fun way, one of which is by conducting educational activities through the storybook “Si Galing”. The storybook “Si Galing” is packed with interesting pictures so that children are interested in reading this book. This book is designed to increase children’s knowledge related to the level of earthquake vulnerability of Cianjur Regency, earthquake mitigation, and what steps should be taken when an earthquake occurs.
During the Meunang (Mitigation and Educational Learning) program on 2/9/2023, the children read the story directly from this book. In addition, the children were also invited to role play, acting out the stories in this book.
The principal of SDN Sukamaju 1, Elis Fahriyah S.pd gave appreciation to the Sigaling PKM-PM team for the self-made storybook for this educational activity.
“Insya Allah, this book will be useful for children,” said Elis Fahriyah, after handing over the storybook “Si Galing” (2/9/2023). Later, this book will become an inventory of the school library so that children can borrow and read this book at any time.
This earthquake mitigation education activity is also carried out through songs related to steps to save themselves during an earthquake and interesting animated videos to increase the enthusiasm of children participating in this activity. The Sigaling PKM-PM team hopes that with this book, children will feel happy and learn the importance of mitigation knowledge, especially during an earthquake.
